Moray and Salineras are two of the most fascinating examples of how innovative the Inca people were with agriculture. To visit these significant sites, we journey through the Sacred Valley – one of the must-see areas of Peru – with local farmland and breathtaking mountain landscapes. Enjoy the view and the cultural sites as we share our in-depth knowledge of the area and the Inca Empire with you. Moray is where the Qhechuan people experimented with agriculture and adapted crops to the different microclimates of the Inca empire. We will explain the history, science and mythology of these strange amphitheatre-like terraces, then you will have time to explore the site yourself and take photos. We will then continue through the village of Maras before descending to the famous Salineras (Salt Mines) where we will discuss the salt crystallisation and extraction methods that have been implemented at Salineras for centuries. We can also extend this tour through Chincheros, a charming town famous for textile weaving, where you can watch as unique pieces are made from alpaca wool and dyed using plants and fruits.   Please peruse our sample itinerary, then get in touch with us to see how we can personalise the tour to your travel style.
We will collect you from your accommodation around 8.30am and travel through the picturesque Sacred Valley to Moray. After we explain the history and organic experimentation that took place here, you have about 40 minutes to walk around the site, relax and take photos. Next we will journey to the picturesque village of Maras, where you can visit the beautiful colonial church and absorb the scenery – rolling farmland with imposing glacial peaks in the background. Maras is best known for its ancient salt mines (Las Salineras). Established in Inca times, Las Salineras continue to be a crucial part of the Peruvian trade industry. We will talk you through the intriguing salt extraction process and you will have the opportunity to taste the many distinct types of salt produced here. From Salineras, we will drive back to Cusco, arriving around 3.00pm.
