Tambopata- part of the Puerto Maldondo region- is a tropical forest covering approximately 50% of Peru’s territory. Located on the eastern slope of the Andes and flourishing in altitudes that range from 0 m to 3,500 m, these forests are home to an incredibly wide array of flora and wildlife. The dry season spans from April to October, while the rainy season runs from November through March. During this time the volume of the river increases, temperatures run around 40°C plus, and the climate becomes extremely humid. It is also during this time that “friajes” can occur (patches of cold weather that sweep up from Patagonia – approx 10°C). The main protected nature reserves in Peru are: Manu National Park, Bahuaja National Park – Sonene, and Tambopata National Reserve, all located in the Madre de Dios region of Peru. These protected areas are part of the Vilcabamba-Amboró Conservation Corridor, a conservation project in the Amazon which aims to protect the regions delineated by the Heath river (a region abundant with macaws) and the Heath pampas. The access point to these natural wonders is located in the city of Puerto Maldonado, 30 minutes from Cusco by plane.
This tour of Tambopata offers the opportunity to experience all the great rainforest has to offer in a safe and exciting setting. You will hike, travel by boat down the river and pampas routes, lookout for the exotic wildlife and sleep in authentic jungle lodges.
You will be collected from the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station (depending on how you choose to travel). You will head to Puerto de Capitanía by a motorized boat, and ride for 35 minutes down the river Madre de Dios until the Tampopata National Reserve control station. After registering you will hike for around 40 minutes until reaching Lake Sandoval, where you can relax with a short break before boarding a boat to explore the surrounding area. Right away you will notice the sheer quantity of environments that allow such a wide range of birds to flourish. You can see the “Shansho” or more commonly known Hoatzin, the world’s only ruminant bird, as well as Anhingas, Cormorans, and Kingfishers perched upon the dry tree trunks of the lake. You will also have close encounters with monkeys (be careful with your snacks!) before travelling to the lodge for dinner and your fist nights sleep. There is an opportunity at midnight to go searching for Alligators on the boat.
After breakfast, you will continue the trip with a 90-minute shuttle ride to Port Atalaya (500 m), where you will board a boat and head toward Rio Madre del Dios. Along this leg of the journey, you will encounter more captivating wildlife including turtles, lizards, alligators, snakes and birds of an infinite array of colors. Your guide will provide detailed explanations throughout the journey. In the afternoon you will arrive to the lodge, Albergue Rainforest. After a period of rest, lunch will be provided before an excursion to explore the jungle. You will be exposed to a range of animals and plants such as, tarantulas, Tapir, ants, butterflies, monkeys, towering trees, and so much more. After exploring, you will return to the lodge for dinner and our second night.
There is also an optional night hike for the brave!
Early in the morning we’ll hike out to the “Colpa” of the macaws, where we can watch parrots and macaws extract hearts of palm, in a marvelous explosion of noise and color. We’ll also see a variety of other birds in the surrounding area. After the show, we’ll head back to lodge to see more wildlife. We’ll have lunch, then head out to see various species of monkeys: howler monkeys, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and tamarins. These species generally live in the trees, looking for food or just lounging about. At dusk, we’ll have a second opportunity to see the black caimans on our way back to the lodge.
After another early morning rise, you will make one last visit to Lake Sandoval, and partake on a short hike through the jungle in the hopes of catching another glimpse of the giant otters or any of the other animal species that are out early to find food. After returning back to the lodge for breakfast, you will board the motorboat back to Puerto Maldonado.
All passengers must receive a yellow fever vaccination prior to departure and bring anti-malaria pills.
